I cried because I knew that the difference we just made was so much bigger than me, so much more than the work I had been doing with adults in the past 15 years. Awakening Young Minds was created and established as a non profit soon after. Our first program included youth from the local boys home, and probation.
The resistance was high. One young man shared his story of pain, abuse, abandonment, gang life, and drug use. He said that no one had ever said things to him like we did, and he asked for help.

Our schools are based on old standardized testing and curricula demanding focus, conformity, and a specific performance by our children. Little movement toward a change, has created students who are bored, angry, and stressed, becoming chronically disengaged in school.
Thousands of our children struggle just to make it through a day - bullying, suicide, drugs are prominent in almost every city in the U. The term at-risk applies to more youth each day. Empathy, integrity, respect, self worth can not be taught by way of lecture, reading books or test taking, yet these are some of the most important components in helping a child navigate through their school years.
Our program has been specifically designed to help youth identify their often misunderstood emotions and underlying feelings in such a way that it brings a rapid transformation to their life. The work is based on the experiential learning process. The emotional roller coasters that the youth are going through at this age can be confusing and distracting.

The youth who participate in our programs find that when they have a safe space to share their story, speak their truth, and trust, they are able to free up a lot of the hidden anger and pain. I learned that when you share your feelings with other people that care, you feel a great relief inside your heart. I learned that everyone has a purpose in life, and that not everything is your fault.
Awakening Young Minds; Perspectives on Education
Curriculum: The Emotional Education class is required as part of the program, and is taught by an AYM certified teacher who will follow the experiential curriculum. The topics are discussed, acted out, expressed through art or writing, and experienced through game playing or processes. Service: Youth are invited and encouraged to volunteer at AYM.
Toward the end of the school year they will be able to practice the empathy they have developed through a community project of their choosing. AYM camp. The CASEL Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning program is an effective program along the same lines of experiential learning through interactive processes, yet we believe through our research that they are only focused on the elementary schools, where we are focused on Middle Schools and High Schools.
